Le mois du cinéma documentaire Edition 2011

A l'occasion de cette nouvelle édition du Mois du film documentaire, la médiathèque du musée du quai Branly vous propose une rétrospective Rina Sherman.

Rina Sherman a commencé à faire du cinéma en Afrique du Sud lors des dernières années de l’apartheid.

Dans un rapport direct avec les personnes filmées, en cherchant une image plastique et en laissant une place importante à l’improvisation, Rina Sherman poursuit une continuité discrète entre les moments puissants et la vie de tous les jours. Qu’elle filme en milieu urbain ou rural, elle tisse des liens intimes avec ses personnages, serre ses plans sur la parole et les corps en mouvement et accorde aux personnes filmées la liberté d’être qui ils sont.

Documentary Film Month 2011 edition

For this edition of Documentary Film Month, the quai Branly Museum in Paris presents a retrospective of Rina Sherman’s films.

Rina Sherman began making films in South Africa during the last years of apartheid.

In a direct relationship with the people she films, while both seeking visual expression and leaving a large place for improvisation, Rina Sherman finds a discreet continuity between powerful moments and everyday life. Whether she films in urban or rural environments, she forges close ties with her characters, frames both speech and moving bodies tightly and awards the people she films the freedom to be who they are.

An Exhibition of Portraits

From the first glance that the Ovahimba pose on the other, they imagine the essential quality of their interlocutor. At this key moment, they decide with whom they have to do. Generally, assigning a nickname does not take long to follow. Thus, shortly after my arrival in the country Ovahimba, they called me Kandavi, based on a figure from the world of fairy spirits that stirs in the stems of a tree. They spotted an active side in me; always busy photographing them, to retain precisely the tender and penetrating gaze they so well know how to show to others.

Concept
A group of young people from Namibia participates in a series of knowledge exchange sessions and workshops in France. The young Ovahimba people from the Kunene Region of Namibia shares aspects of their cultural heritage with French experts and the public at large.
