Après sept années de vécue avec des Ovahimba en Namibie et Angola, Rina Sherman est de retour à Paris, ville où elle s’est exilée en 1984 d’Afrique du Sud. Ce retour coïncide avec la mort de trois grands amis : Jean Rouch - cinéaste, mentor et copain, Didier Contant – grand reporter et âme sœur, le Chef d’Etanga, patriarche de sa famille Omuhimba, père de sa vie.
Rina Sherman porte à l’écran un poème urbain sur la vie en ville au travers une réflexion sur les droits de l’homme, la liberté d’expression face à l’impunité, le cinéma et ses retrouvailles avec la « vie-ville » après une rencontre intense et riche avec une famille africaine aux valeurs et éthique intactes.

Paris of My Exiles
Following seven years of communal life with the Ovahimba in Namibia and Angola, Rina Sherman is back in Paris, city in which she took up exile from South Africa in 1984. Her return coincides with the death of three close friends: Jean Rouch – filmmaker, mentor and pal, Didier Contant – grand reporter and âme Buysœur, the Headman of Etanga – patriach of her Omuhimba family and father of her life.
Rina Sherman brings to the screen an urban poem about urban life through a her thoughts on human rights, freedom of expression, the cinema and her return to city life, following and intense and rich encounter with an African family whose values and ethics are intact.

Keep the Dance Alive
A film about the music dance and spirit possession practices of the Ojtiherero language-speaking groups of north-western Namibia and south-western Angola. They are the Ovahimba, Ovadhimba, Ovahakaona, Ovakuvale, Ovatjimba... They are different but share a common culture and belief systems. The film explores the various ways in which music and dance transcend their everyday lives from infancy to death.

Ils sont Ovahimba, Ovadhimba, Ovahakaona, Ovagambwe, Ovakuvale, Ovatua. Ils partagent tous une même culture et un même système de pensée. Le film explore les différentes façons dont la musique et la danse transcendent leur vie quotidienne de la petite enfance jusqu'à la mort.

Shake Your Brains A film about alcohol abuse in the Kunene North Region of Namibia. It was made to alert the youth of the detrimental effects of alcohol abuse. The film provides and overview of alcohol abuse amongst the Ovahimba and Ovadhimba communities of Kaokoland. A number of members of these communities provide moving and sometimes amusing witnesses of the devastating and often tragic effects of alcohol abuse. Whilst alcohol abuse is a problem in the Kunene Region of Namibia, with not only permanent commercial and traditional selling points in the larger and smaller urban areas but also itinerant traders selling or exchanging alcohol throughout the region, it is still limited for the most part to only a part of the population and takes place as an occasional rather than an ongoing occurrence. The film served as an educational tool in a variety of educational and guidance applications and as such was targeted at the youth both on a regional and national level. The making of this film was an opportunity for The Ovahimba Years Project to share its resources, equipment and expertise with members of the community and other partners working in the Region. Voyage, Voyage - La Namibie

Rina Sherman revient d'un séjour d'un mois en Namibie chez les Ovahimbas, à Opuwo. Cette musicienne, ethnologue, cinéaste et écrivain a rapporté un "carnet de voyage" qui associe minutie documentaire et imaginaire débridé.
"Le dernier bout de la route s'étend droit devant, avant que l'on descende dans la plaine entourée de hauts plateaux. Des rangées de petites maisons se tiennent sur une colline comme sur le pouce d'un géant. En bas, dans le village, se trouvent les grandes maisons. Là, tout ce qui est fenêtre ou porte est couvert avec de la gaze dans un effort vain contre la poussière fine que les vents hivernaux amènent en nuages et tourbillons. Opowo est le genre d'endroit qu'un étranger peut traverser sans s'en rendre compte..." (Rina Sherman)

Avec sa caméra-stylo, le réalisateur-voyageur filme en toute liberté, au gré de ses impressions et de ses émotions. La Namibie entre documentaire et imaginaire débridé. En quelques séquences et grâce à un récit à la première personne, Rina Sherman nous renvoie au plaisir de fréquenter le monde.

At the school of the Rio Tinto Gold Mine near Masvingo in Zimbabwe, children are taught dance as part of their school curriculum. Their bodies are totally engaged with the boys playing percussion whilst the girls take their first dance steps.

Un film sur la vie en ville.
Les citadins dont il est question vivent à Noisy-le-Sec, ville de la banlieue parisienne. La ville entre ici dans la composition d’un paysage humain, dessiné au gré des rencontres. Les personnages du film y participent à l’invention d’une histoire qui explore, en parallèle, passé, présent et avenir. En rapport constant avec la caméra à l’épaule, ils racontent leurs vies et improvisent une histoire à la fois authentique et imaginée. Les images urbaines, choisies comme décors, sont soutenues par une expression sonore, un principe d’alternance permettant d’articuler ce qui est inventé et ce qui est saisi sur le vif.
Une histoire en fragments, où quelques habitants, qui sont bien quand ils le peuvent et ne le sont pas quand ils ne peuvent pas, évoluent dans un univers où les escaliers de maison conduisent aux bretelles d’autoroute, où les portes de cimetières s’ouvrent sur des bassins vides, bassins de piscines désaffectées, de fontaines sèches, de baignoires sans bouchons. Voici le malentendu, moteur de l’histoire, transformé en une évocation de la vie en site urbain : l’absence de l’eau. L’eau qui, pour Hériclite ne coule jamais deux fois de la même façon. L’eau que l’espace sonore ne cessera d’évoquer en note de pédale, pour qu’elle coule et que la vie reprenne à cette interstice que créent la rencontre les eaux profondes et le sable dans le lit de l’océan.

In Noisy-le-Sec, a city-suburb in the North-East of Paris, the city forms a human landscape, painted from one encounter to the next. The characters participate in the invention of a story exploring past, present and future in parallel. In close contact with a handheld camera, they tell the stories of their lives and improvise a tale that is both authentic and imaginary. The urban images chosen as decor are complimented by a sound universe alternating between invented and live sounds.
